Healthy Snack Tips to Make Your Family Road Trip Awesome

Summer’s coming, and for many families that means the annual family road trip. Whether you’re headed to the cabin or the beach, visiting friends or relatives, these healthy snacks will help you avoid the “We’re on vacation, let’s eat anything” trap that is so easy to fall into.

A little planning can go a long way to ensure that your family is eating right while on the road. Fresh organic fruit and veggies should be at the top of your list. Apples, bananas, grapes, crunchy carrots and celery sticks, and cherry tomatoes are delicious and hassle-free.

Dried organic fruits and nuts—banana chips, coconut chips, mangos, cranberries, apricots and figs, almonds, cashews, and walnuts—are also great for snacking on while on the road. Eat them individually or mix your favorites together for a homemade trail mix. Dried fruits and nuts are a great source of fiber, and nuts have the added benefit of unsaturated “healthy” fats, which can reduce the risk of high blood cholesterol levels. Dried fruits and nuts also contribute to making you feel full.

If you bring a cooler along, organic Greek yogurt and hard-boiled eggs pack plenty of protein. Frozen organic fruits may stave off the need to stop at a roadside ice cream stand. Similarly, organic hummus (Inspired Organics has six tempting varieties to choose from) and tortilla chips answer the craving for “the salties” while providing complex carbohydrates that release sugars more slowly than candy bars and sugary sodas.

Don’t forget about organic whole-grain cereals. Inspired Organics’ Toasted O’s and Rice Crisp are tasty and healthy options while taking in the views of the open road.
